Read Your Kindle BooksWith Your Own Assistive Tech
When Kindle's built-in accessibility doesn't reach a book, TextMuncher extracts the text — so your screen reader, TTS app, or Braille display can take it from there.

When the Built-In Accessibility Doesn't Reach the Book
Amazon ships real accessibility features, and when they work they're the better path. This page is about the gaps readers actually run into — and what to do when you hit one. TextMuncher captures the pages visually and converts them to plain text with OCR.
When the Reader Only Reads the Menus
Amazon supports screen readers across several Kindle apps, and it often works. Readers still report books where the app reads the interface but not the text, or where focus skips paragraphs.
Text-to-Speech That Doesn't Fit
VoiceView and Assistive Reader cover a lot of titles. The gaps readers describe: voices that mangle unfamiliar words, no background playback, or a book the feature won't handle.
Locked Into One Reading Setup
Font, spacing, and contrast options live inside the reader app. Moving a book into the tool you actually read with isn't something the app offers.
How TextMuncher Helps
Extract the text, then use it with whatever assistive technology you already read with.
Plain Text for Your Own Tools
Output is standard plain text — the format screen readers, TTS apps, and editors already handle. You pick the tool instead of the app picking for you.
Text-to-Speech Ready
Paste extracted text into any TTS application. Listen to your books with NaturalReader, Speechify, or your system's built-in voice.
A Starting Point, Not a Finished Format
TextMuncher outputs plain text and page images — not Braille transcription or tagged documents. Convert it with the accessible-format tools you already use.
Full Formatting Control
Once the text is extracted, display it however you need — custom fonts, sizes, colors, spacing, and contrast settings in any editor.

For Disability Services Offices
Students with print disabilities need ebook content in formats their tools can read. In Speed mode — the default for everyone — TextMuncher's OCR runs entirely in the student's browser and nothing is uploaded. Quality mode, an optional Pro feature, sends hard-to-read pages to a cloud OCR service for a second pass; review your student-data policy before enabling it. Output is plain text and page images, ready for your existing accessible-format tools.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can screen readers read Kindle books?
Often, yes. Amazon documents screen-reader support across several Kindle apps, and support varies by app, browser, and title. Where the built-in path works, it's the better one — use it. TextMuncher is for the cases where it doesn't: the book won't read aloud, focus skips content, or you need the text in a different tool. It captures the pages visually and converts them to plain text with OCR.
Does TextMuncher work with JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver?
TextMuncher outputs standard plain text, which those tools read like any other text file. We haven't run a formal end-to-end test with each screen reader, so we won't claim certified support. Try it on your free pages and see how it behaves in your own setup.
Can disability services offices use TextMuncher?
Yes. In Speed mode — the default for everyone — OCR runs entirely in the browser: pages and text are never uploaded or stored. The one exception is Quality mode, an optional Pro feature someone has to switch on: pages flagged as hard to read are sent — the page image and its draft transcription — to a cloud OCR service, then returned. Review your student-data policy before enabling Quality mode. Contact us for institutional pricing information.
Is the extracted text formatted for easy reading?
TextMuncher outputs plain text that you can format however you need. Paste it into Word, Google Docs, or any editor and adjust the font, size, spacing, and colors to match your accessibility preferences. OCR isn't perfect, so proofread passages that have to be exact.
Does TextMuncher itself have accessibility features?
The TextMuncher web app and extension use standard HTML elements and support keyboard navigation. We haven't published a formal accessibility conformance report. If you hit a barrier, email us and we'll work on it.
