Why Are Personal Document Notes Hard to Export?

Amazon treats Send-to-Kindle documents differently from purchased books when it comes to note export.

Kindle personal documents (files sent via Send-to-Kindle) have limited highlight and note export options. Your highlights may not appear on read.amazon.com/notebook, and the My Clippings file often truncates long passages. To export the full text and your annotations, open the document in Kindle Cloud Reader and use TextMuncher to capture page screenshots. OCR converts them to complete, copyable text.

Notebook Sync Is Unreliable

Personal document highlights often do not sync to read.amazon.com/notebook. They may only exist on the device where you made them.

No Web Export Path

While purchased book highlights can be viewed online, personal documents frequently show zero highlights on the web interface.

Clippings File Truncates

My Clippings.txt on your Kindle device records highlights, but truncates passages longer than a few sentences. Long annotations get cut off.

How to Get Everything Out

Full Text Capture

TextMuncher captures every page of your personal document, not just the highlighted portions. Get the full context, not fragments.

Works When Sync Fails

Even if your highlights did not sync to Amazon's servers, TextMuncher captures directly from the screen. No sync dependency.

Your Documents Stay Private

OCR runs locally in your browser. Personal and sensitive documents are never uploaded to any server.

How It Works

Three steps. No technical knowledge required.

1. Open in Cloud Reader

Go to read.amazon.com and open your personal document. It should appear in your Kindle library.

2. Capture Pages

Run TextMuncher to capture the pages you need. The extension handles page turning automatically.

3. Extract and Save

Upload screenshots for OCR. Copy the text into your notes app, research tool, or AI assistant.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a Kindle personal document?

Any file you sent to your Kindle using Send-to-Kindle email or the Send to Kindle app. This includes PDFs, Word documents, EPUBs, and text files. They appear in your Kindle library but are not purchased books.

Why do my personal document highlights not show up online?

Amazon does not reliably sync personal document annotations to their web interface. This is a known limitation. Highlights may only exist on the specific Kindle device or app where you created them.

Can I extract the original file instead?

If you still have the original file (PDF, DOCX, etc.), you may not need TextMuncher. This tool is most useful when the original file is lost, or when you need to extract highlighted sections with surrounding context.

Does this work with Send-to-Kindle PDFs?

Yes, if the PDF opens in Kindle Cloud Reader. Some PDFs display directly while others are converted to Kindle format. Either way, TextMuncher can capture what is displayed.
